Distances nasce nell'ambito di Street Geography. Drawing cities for a sustainable future, progetto site-specific promosso dal DiSSGeA dell'Università di Padova e dall'Ufficio Progetto Giovani del Comune di Padova. L'intervento, commissionato per il Lungargine Scaricatore al Bassanello, si sviluppa come un'opera pubblica dedicata alla presenza del fiume Bacchiglione nel tessuto urbano.

La riflessione muove dai limiti della percezione quotidiana del corso d'acqua: del Bacchiglione esperiamo solitamente un tratto circoscritto, un frammento locale isolato dal suo sviluppo continuo. Attraverso la collaborazione con un geografo, ho ricostruito l'intero tragitto idrografico ricomponendolo in un'unica immagine stratificata, che contiene il percorso del fiume dalla sua origine in quota fino alla pianura.

L'installazione adotta la forma e i codici di una struttura di segnaletica stradale, sovvertendone la funzione prescrittiva. Le indicazioni orientano verso distanze non misurabili, siderali o emotive, alle quali non possono essere assegnati valori assoluti ma solo relativi. L'insegna mappa la direzione, la sorgente e la foce del fiume, affiancandovi una dicitura che ne esplicita il costante allontanamento dall'origine: un movimento di progressivo distacco che non ne annulla l'appartenenza.

Ne deriva uno scarto di senso sul luogo, che pone in dialogo la dimensione cartografica con la geografia affettiva: la storia del fiume che si allontana dalla sorgente riflette inevitabilmente quella di ognuno di noi.

Distances was conceived within ‘Street Geography. Drawing cities for a sustainable future’, a site-specific project promoted by the DiSSGeA of the University of Padova and the Progetto Giovani Office of the Municipality of Padova. The work, commissioned for the Lungargine Scaricatore at Bassanello, takes the form of a public artwork dedicated to the presence of the Bacchiglione river within the urban fabric.

The reflection begins with the limits of our everyday perception of the watercourse: of the Bacchiglione we ordinarily experience only a circumscribed stretch, a local fragment isolated from its continuous development. Through collaboration with a geographer, I reconstructed the entire hydrographic course, recomposing it into a single stratified image that contains the river's path from its source in the mountains down to the plain.

The installation adopts the form and codes of a road-signage structure, subverting its prescriptive function. The indications point towards distances that cannot be measured — sidereal or emotional — to which no absolute values can be assigned, only relative ones. The sign maps the direction, the source and the mouth of the river, accompanying them with a phrase that makes explicit its constant distancing from its origin: a movement of progressive detachment that does not annul its belonging.

What emerges is a shift of meaning upon the place, one that places cartographic dimension and affective geography in dialogue: the story of the river that moves away from its source inevitably reflects that of each of us.
